Renewal: typically involves submitting documentation that shows you’ve maintained active employment and participated in professional development—this is often done using a point system.
Recertification: usually requires retaking an exam and may also involve providing proof of continuing education, relevant work history, or other requirements.
Depending on the certification program, you may have the option to renew by application or recertify by exam.
Review the specific renewal requirements for your certification type to determine which options are available to you.
You can track both your certification expiration date and renewal progress in MyCert.
Your expiration date is also listed on your ASNT digital badge, certificate, wallet card (if applicable), and in the certificate and qualification holders’ directory.
We will begin sending reminder emails about six months before your certification expires. However, it’s ultimately your responsibility to keep track of your certification status and take action before it lapses.
You can begin the renewal process up to six months before your certification expires. If you plan to recertify by exam, you must pass the exam before your certification expiration date. All required documentation and payments must also be submitted before the expiration to maintain your certification status.
If you hold an ASNT NDT Level III or ASNT 9712 Level II or III certification, you may be eligible to renew by earning professional development points. ASNT offers a variety of qualifying activities, such as training, webinars, and active employment, that reflect your continued learning and engagement in the NDT field.
Each program has its own point system and documentation requirements, so it’s important to review the guidelines specific to your certification. As you earn points, you can log in to MyCert to track your progress, upload supporting documentation, and monitor your certification status.

If your certification is not renewed/recertified by the expiration date, it will lapse, and you will no longer be authorized to represent yourself as ASNT certified or use any ASNT certification marks or logos.
To regain certified status, you will need to reapply as a new candidate, which includes submitting a new application, required documentation, payment, and successfully passing all applicable exams.
Equalization is an option available for the ASNT NDT Level III certification program. This service allows you to align the expiration dates of multiple ASNT NDT Level III certificates, so they can all be renewed together when your earliest certificate expires. All equalized certificates will then share the same expiration date moving forward.
