ASNT NDT Level III Renewal Point Categories and Structure

ASNT NDT Level III certificants can renew by earning a minimum of 25 points during the five-year (60-month) period of their certification. Track your points as you earn them in MyCert.

ASNT offers various activities eligible for renewal points to maintain your NDT certification. This points system enables you to document ongoing learning and commitment to your NDT practice. You can earn points for:

  • ASNT Level III refresher courses

  • Accredited CEU courses

  • College courses

  • Corporate training courses

  • Other high-quality courses leading to exams

The course must:

  • Be at or above your qualification level (Level II or III) in the NDT methods you are certified in, or

  • Be NDT-related (e.g., math, physical science, quality control), or

Cover advanced NDT topics.

No. Time spent taking any type of exam does not earn renewal points.

No. Serving as a session chair, section officer, national officer, or committee chair does not earn points.

Exception: If you lead a technical society meeting whose main purpose is a significant technical project (not administrative work) and it meets the requirements for activity H in Table 1, it may qualify.

No. Writing test procedures, QC manuals, or similar documents for your employer is considered part of your regular job and does not earn points.

You must show proof you attended the actual technical presentation—general conference attendance is not enough.
At ASNT conferences:

  • Conference staff will send an email after the conference that requires your response of what technical sessions you attended

Not unless they are:

  • Presented as a technical paper, or

  • Published in accordance with Activities C or F in Table 1.

Yes. Passing math or physical science courses as part of a college degree program can earn points. You must provide documentation showing the number of contact hours.

Your certificate must show either:

  • Contact hours, or

  • CEUs (Continuing Education Units)

Note:
1 CEU = 10 contact hours = 2.5 ASNT recertification points.

No. You must submit signed documentation from that person, not just their name.

Yes—if they are published in:

  • A technical society journal, or

  • An official society publication

They do not count if:

  • They are only for a company or government audience

  • They are given at private or restricted access meetings

Provide documentation that would satisfy a strict QA/QC auditor.

ASNT records are audited every year. If there’s a question about your documentation or point eligibility, the Certification Management Council makes the final decision.

Definitions

You can earn points for official, identifiable projects with national technical societies. Examples include:

  • Round robin or individual studies

  • Writing or updating guidelines, appendices, specifications, recommended practices, codes, or standards

Acceptable proof includes:

  • Memos or letter reports

  • Drafts of committee documents

  • Major written comments on draft documents

Does not qualify:

  • Verbal comments

  • Simply attending meetings

  • Returning ballots without major comments

Work on ASNT publications should be counted under Categories E, F, and G.

An NDT audit performed at a facility other than where you work. This includes audits of NDT vendors or suppliers.

A published article with 1000 words or more at the time of publication.

Points are based on your paid ASNT membership during your current 5-year certification cycle.

  • You earn 1 point per year of membership 

Meetings, conferences, symposia, seminars, or panels organized or sponsored by a national technical society and advertised nationally.

May qualify if:

  • A regional event meets the above criteria

  • A foreign or international event is hosted by a national or international technical society and is open to the public

Does not qualify:

  • Trade shows or trade association meetings

  • Closed or invitation only meetings

Patents issued by the US Patent Office or an equivalent official agency in another country.

Authors and reviewers may earn points for published materials as listed on the Publication Renew Points page.

Proof can include written or email confirmation from the Publications Department that your work was received and published.

A break in practice or work of more than 12 consecutive months.

A nonprofit organization that represents:

  • An industry segment in an NDT-related field, or

  • An industry that uses NDT.

Publications from national technical societies qualify. Foreign or international technical journals also qualify.

Currently valid, non-ASNT NDT-related certifications count for one point each. Examples include:

  • AWS CWI or SCWI

  • API 510, 570, 653

  • NACE

  • ASQ CQA

If a certification body issues separate certificates for each NDT method, you may only count one certificate from that body.
