As part of an agreement with the American Welding Society (AWS), we provide AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWIs) and Senior CWIs access to visual testing (VT) certification. This agreement helps companies and individuals meet personnel qualification requirements.

On this page, you’ll find details about the full application process for CWI/SCWI certification. Here are some key points to understand before you begin.

All applications are online

All applications are submitted, reviewed, and approved through MyCert, a secure online platform that’s integrated with your MyASNT account. You can access both portals with the same login information.

Gather documentation in advance

During the application process in MyCert, you’ll be asked to provide records verifying current CWI/SCWI certification and a completed vision form and photo identification.

Pay all fees at time of application

You can pay with a credit card, by check, or by wire transfer. Payment must be received in full before your application can be reviewed and processed.

Understand and Plan for CWI/SCWI Fees

To achieve CWI/SCWI certification, applicants must apply for the Level II VT general industry direct certification and can additionally add on certification for the pressure equipment (PE) sector.

  • a color photo headshot

  • visual acuity form completed by your employer or eye doctor using the Jaeger J1 eye chart

To be sure your application for CWI/SCWI certification is considered—and that you get timely approval—be sure to:

  • Complete the online application.

  • Upload all documentation.

  • Sign required agreements, including the ASNT Code of Ethics and Confirmation Statement.

  • Pay all applicable fees by credit card, wire transfer, or check.

  • Watch for a letter of approval of your application in your email inbox.
