About the Program

The ASNT Authorized Training Organization (ATO) program provides an independent, third-party peer review of a nondestructive testing (NDT) training organization. ASNT evaluates administrative and operational practices to ensure quality and consistency. Approved organizations that meet the requirements can use the ASNT logo, signifying their commitment to excellence in NDT training.

ATO accreditation is open to:

  • Accredited post-secondary schools, colleges, and universities

  • Licensed private schools or institutes

  • Vocational-technical and technical schools

  • Private companies, organizations, and consultants offering NDT training

Yes. International training providers can apply. ASNT adjusts the process as needed to account for regional standards and codes.

  • Employers – Confidence that training meets recognized quality and compliance standards.

  • Training Organizations – Recognition as an ASNT ATO, increased credibility, and the right to display the ATO logo.

  • Students – Assurance that their training provider meets industry-recognized standards.

  • Industry (NDT and beyond) – A credible review process that strengthens training quality in sectors such as aerospace, energy, construction, and manufacturing, where NDT is essential for safety and quality.

Application and Accreditation Process

The timeline depends on how quickly the applicant responds to requests for information. Generally:

1. Document Review – ASNT reviews submissions within 30 days.

2. Follow-Up – Applicants have 15 days to address any requests for additional information.

3. Operational Audit – Conducted within 3 business days; findings must be addressed within 30 days.

4. Final Review – The audit report is reviewed and approved by committee vote (allow 30 days).

Once approved, ASNT issues the accreditation certificate, approval letter, and guidelines for logo use.

Applicants identify the standards their training meets, such as

  • SNT-TC-1A

  • CP-189

  • EN 4179,

  • NAS-410

ASNT’s review aligns with the standards the applicant lists.

Fees depend on the organization’s size, scope, and location. Contact ASNT Certification Services for the current fee schedule.

ASNT provides a detailed report of nonconformities. Applicants can correct and resubmit evidence within a defined timeframe.

Compliance, Renewal, and Related Programs

ATO accreditation is valid for five years, with a mid-term review audit at approximately 2½ years.

Yes, accreditation can be revoked if an organization fails to maintain compliance, refuses a re-audit, or misrepresents its programs.

ATO accreditation is not automatically transferable. The new ownership must notify ASNT and may need to undergo a review to ensure continued compliance.

No. While similar in scope to the EN 4179/UK NANDTB process, the ATO program does not replace the NAS-410 NADCAP audit.

No. Nuclear oversight bodies such as NUPIC or NIAC, or major manufacturers, will still audit to applicable codes and regulations, including 10CFR50 Appendix B (as modified by NQA-1) and relevant ASME B&PV Code sections.

ASNT ATO accreditation evaluates training organizations to ensure their programs meet administrative, operational, and quality standards. ASNT certification evaluates individuals' knowledge, skill, and competence in NDT methods.

Accredited organizations receive guidelines for appropriate logo use, including placement, size, and permitted materials. Misuse can result in loss of accreditation.
